SMinstruc.docx Think back to the five SMART goals you created earlier in the term. Write a reflection paper following APA format and consisting of 750-1000 words in length. Use the following questions to guide your response:    1. What were you expecting from the experience before you started?    2. Why were you expecting this?    3. Why did you choose this goal?    4. Did you learn anything about a different group in society (i.e., different age, profession, ethnic, racial or socio-economic group)? What did you learn?    5. What is the most valuable experience you acquired?   6. What impact did the experience have on your everyday life?    7. What did you learn that was directly related to your course objectives? smartgoalsNUR630.pptx Setting SMART Goals  Art Snoke NUR 630 1 Introduction Clear, reachable goals are needed for growth. SMART goals help break down large objectives into manageable steps (Ogbeiwi, 2021). The SMART method stands for: Specific: Clear and defined goals. Measurable: How you can track your progress. Attainable: Realistic and possible to achieve. Realistic: Possible and practical in your current situation. Timely: Having a deadline for when the goal should be achieved. 2 Goal 1 – Improve Mental Health Assessment Skills I will improve my ability to do comprehensive mental health assessments, aiming for 90% accuracy documenting patient histories, symptoms, by the end of my clinical term. Specific: This goal focuses on improving mental health assessment skills, mainly with documentation and identifying psychiatric symptoms. Measurable: My target is to have 90% accuracy on assessments, which can be tracked by feedback from my clinical preceptor. Attainable: With practice, getting 90% accuracy rate is realistic. I want to improve my confidence and accuracy with patient history, presenting symptom, and in order to help improve my ability in mental health assessment. My goal is hit 90% accuracy in my assessments by the end of term. This is specific because it will help improve my mental health assessment’s. Getting feedback from my clinical preceptor can help me track my progress. That is something I can attain because of practice and guidance. It is realistic because mental health assessments are something that psychiatric NP’s are expected to master, and 90% accuracy is a reasonable target. I hope to achieve this goal by the end of the term and with feedback from my preceptor. 3 Realistic: With the number of patients seen this goal can be achieved. Also, having supervision and feedback helps. Timely: The goal is to improve by the end of 7-week term. Feedback and reviewing my progress to adjust where necessary. 4 Goal 2 – Develop Stronger Communication with Patients "I will improve my communication skills with active listening and empathy with at least 80% of my patients. Specific: This goal is about improving therapeutic communication with patients, focusing on listening, showing empathy, and building trust. Measurable: Success will be measured by feedback from patients and preceptor. Attainable: Clinicals provides a chance to practice communication with different patients, and feedback will help improvement. Trying to improve on my communication skills, with active listening, improving empathy. I hope to get positive feedback from 80% of my patients. This is a specific goal, it will improve the way I communicate with patients. I will get feedback from my patients and preceptor. I have plenty of chances to practice at clinicals, that’s attainable. It is realistic to improve communication. I will track my progress and hope to hit my 80% target by the end of the 7 week term. 5 Realistic: This is a realistic goal because effective communication is needed for nursing, and practicing will make this achievable. Timely: Progress will be reviewed and with feedback and goal will be met by the end of the 7-week term. Goal 3 – Gain Proficiency in Using DSM-5 for Diagnosis "I will get better at using the DSM-5 for diagnosing psychiatric conditions by accurately diagnosing patients under supervision by the end of term." Specific: The goal is to use the DSM-5 to diagnose psychiatric conditions, aiming for proficiency with the diagnostic criteria. Attainable: I will have access to the DSM-5 and receive help from clinical preceptor to meet this goal. I want to use of the DSM-5 with diagnosing psychiatric conditions. I want to accurately diagnose with the DSM-5 by the end of my clinicals. It is measurable because I can count the cases I'm able to accurately diagnose and my preceptor will give feedback. I will be able to apply the DSM-5 to different real life cases ,this it is attainable. This is a realistic goal because being able to diagnose well and effectively is an important part of psychiatric nursing. I plan to reach this by the end of term. 7 Realistic: Using the DSM-5 is an important skill for PMHNP , and with regular patient contact and supervision with my preceptor. I can meet this goal. Timely: This goal will be met by the end of term, with regular progress checks. Goal 4 – Enhance Collaborative Teamwork Skills "I will improve my teamwork and collaboration with working with others. I plan on going to team meetings or case reviews. Specific: This goal is focused on improving collaboration with other healthcare professionals, psychologists, and social workers. Measurable: The success of this goal will be tracked by attending team meetings or case reviews. Attainable: In the clinical setting, there will be regular team meetings, providing opportunities for participation. I plan to be involved in team meetings or case reviews. This goal is specific because it shows devlopment of teamwork. This will be measurable, I can count the number of team meetings I attend and being part of the discussions. This is attainable because team meetings will happen regularly so I can volunteer to be active in the discussions. It’s realistic because teamwork is a necessary skill. Working with other healthcare professionals is going to be something I’ll be doing. I will achieve this goal by the end of term and progress will be evaluated withmy preceptor. 9 Realistic: Collaborating with a team is a vital part of being a PMHNP, and this goal fits within the scope of the clinical environment. Timely: The goal will be completed by the end of my clinical term, with continuing participation and recapping on teamwork skills. 10 Goal 5 – Improve Crisis Intervention Skills "I will improve my crisis intervention skills by successfully managing at least two psychiatric crises, using de-escalation techniques and emergency protocols, with supervision with my preceptor. Specific: The goal is to develop crisis intervention skills, with focus on managing crises de-escalation techniques. Measurable: Success will be measured by successfully managing at least two psychiatric crises, with feedback from my preceptor. Attainable: The goal is achievable with patient contact, training, role-playing, and real-time supervision. I want to be better at handling psychiatric crises with the use of de-escalation techniques. I want to be successful at managing at least two psychiatric crisis with supervision. The goal is specific because learning and applying crisis intervention techniques are essential in this field of nursing. I will be able to measure this by how many crises I successfully manage with feedback from my preceptor. This is achievable because I will be exposed to crisis intervention techniques. It’s a realistic goal, managing crises is part of being PMHNP and I will have time to practice. My goal is to get to this by the end of the clinical term. 11 Realistic: Managing psychiatric crises is a key nursing skill, and with proper training and guidance, handling real crises is realistic. Timely: The goal will be reviewed with my preceptor during the 7-week term, with two successful interventions being the target. Conclusion The five SMART goals aim to develop skills in assessment, communication, proficiency, teamwork, and crisis intervention. Having clear, measurable, and realistic goals ensures progress and positive development throughout clinicals. I will evaluate progress with my preceptor and adjust goals as needed to improve.
